Forbes Marshall Flash Vessel FMFV
When condensate at a higher pressure is discharged at a lower pressure, a part of it is flashed. While many plants recover condensate without flashing it, the separation of condensate and flash steam prior to heat recovery is much more efficient and beneficial.
Installing a Forbes Marshall Flash Vessel is the most reliable and efficient way of separating condensate and flash steam before heat recovery. Flash steam contains 40 to 50% of the total energy in condensate and can be reused in low pressure applications. The Flash Vessel is a simple vessel in which when high pressure condensate is released, the flash steam is separated out and recovered from the top. The flash steam separated in the flash vessel can be further utilized for low-pressure steam using processes.
- Simple construction makes it very easy to install the flash vessel on any steam system.
- Comes pre-installed with auxillary accessories like pressure gauge etc.
- Comes with insulation jackets to minimise the radiation loss.
- Results in significant reduction in steam consumption, especially in plants that use low pressure steam.
- Comes with complete instrumentation for absolute safety.

Frequently Asked Questions
While both of the above options fully utilise the het content, generating steam has its own associated losses. When we separate out flash steam, we get ready-to-use low pressure steam generating which would otherwise lead to a certain amount of losses.
The FMFV is designed to recover and utilise flash steam generated from condensate. It separates flash steam from condensate effectively, making it suitable for reuse in processes or heating applications. This helps improve energy efficiency by repurposing heat that would otherwise be wasted.
The typical installation requirements for a flash vessel include proper sizing to match steam flow and pressure conditions, installation at a location with higher condensate pressure for efficient flash steam generation, and ensuring adequate vent and drain connections for steam and condensate. The vessel should be securely mounted on a stable base, insulated to minimise heat loss, and connected to condensate return lines to direct recovered condensate back to the system.
The Forbes Marshall flash vessel should always be installed vertically to ensure proper separation of flash steam and condensate.
A flash vessel is needed when high-pressure condensate needs to be reduced to a lower pressure to generate flash steam, when flash steam recovery is required for low-pressure applications, or when energy is required to be recycled from condensate. It also helps in systems where condensate cannot be returned by gravity, by separating and redirecting both flash steam and liquid condensate, and is used to supply low-pressure steam for heating, drying, or other processes.
A flash vessel captures high-pressure condensate and allows it to expand (flash) into low-pressure steam when exposed to a pressure drop.
This process separates flash steam, which can be reused for low-pressure applications, and liquid condensate, which can be returned to the boiler or system for re-heating. By recovering both flash steam and condensate, a flash vessel reduces energy consumption, minimises water wastage, and improves overall system efficiency.
