Feedback Control

This is one of the fundamental concepts in control theory, involving the return of a portion of the output signal to the input to reduce errors and stabilize the system. The concept of feedback improves the accuracy and stability of control systems.

Feedback control involves the use of signals derived from the output of a system to adjust the inputs in a way that achieves desired outcomes. The primary purpose of feedback is to reduce error, which is the difference between the actual output and the desired output.

Example and Application:
Thermostat Heating System: In a heating system, a thermostat measures the room temperature and compares it with the desired set temperature. If the room temperature is lower than the set temperature, the thermostat sends a signal to turn on the heating element. As the room warms up and reaches the desired temperature, the thermostat reduces or shuts off the heat, maintaining the room temperature around a set point.

Set Point: The desired or target value that the system tries to maintain.
Error Signal: The difference between the set point and the actual measurement of the output.

Open-Loop and Closed-Loop Control

Stability Analysis

Cascade Ratio Control

In a cascade system, the output of one controller becomes the setpoint for another. Here in a ratio control system, the process variable of one controller becomes the setpoint for another, such that two process variables remain in constant proportion (ratio) to one another.

PID Controllers

Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers combine three different types of control strategies—proportional, integral, and derivative—in a single control loop to minimize the error.
They adjust a control variable to correct errors between a desired set point and a process variable.

Chemical Reactor Temperature Control: A PID controller can adjust the heating rate not only based on the difference between the current temperature and the setpoint (proportional) but also on the accumulation of past errors (integral) and the rate of change of the temperature (derivative), ensuring the reactor operates at an optimal temperature for different reactions.
